Chapter Fifteen
Niall Bennet sat in his car waiting for Rachel. She was late. He flicked through his playlist and found a tune he liked. He loved the artist Dave and put on âProfessorâ, one of his favourite tracks. He turned it up to get the bass line pumping through the speakers. His was a nice motor, a snazzy whip. A black Golf GTI was the car most lads on the estate would have given a kidney to own. The interior was tip-top, too. It smelt like vanilla, sweet and clean. Niall admired himself in the rear-view mirror. He pushed his hair to the side with a quick flick of his wrist. The passenger door opened unexpectedly and made him jump. And there she was, flushed and out of breath and absolutely stunning.
âIâm so sorry Iâm late. I went to see Dot and she kept me talking. I couldnât get away. I felt so bad leaving her. The poor woman only has me visiting her. Her son is not allowed near her after what heâs done to her. And she didnât look that good. You know when you can just tell someone is ill? Her eyes looked cloudy and she was coughing all the time.â
She got in and clicked her seatbelt into the socket.
âItâs a good job Iâve not booked anywhere yet. I thought youâd carted me. I was going to get off,â Niall smiled.
She playfully punched him in the arm. âShurrup. Iâm here now. Where are we going?â
Niall flicked the engine over and grinned as he pulled out from the quiet side-street. Rachel insisted they met in quiet places, away from prying eyes, and a part of him loved the mystery. He was her secret and she seemed to want to keep it like that. He wasnât afraid of her family, but he didnât want to rush into telling anyone about them. âIâve booked us a surprise. Can you stay out for the night?â
Rachel gulped. âWhat do you mean?â
âIâm taking us to a posh hotel in Cheshire for the night. Weâre out of the way there and we can have a proper date night without you looking over your shoulder all the time.â
Theyâd been seeing each other for a while now, and sheâd known this day would come. Theyâd played around but, up to now, sheâd not had sex with him. But she found herself grinning back at him. She knew she shouldnât be talking to a Bennet, let alone contemplating spending the night with him, but this was what sheâd always wanted â the big romance.
Niall pulled onto the main road and asked her again. âSo, are we going to the hotel?â
âYeah, erm, yes,â she replied, trying to be confident. She pulled out her mobile phone and texted Hannah:
Iâm staying at yours tonight if anyone asks. Thx a million.
She pressed the send button and wrote another message, this time to her mother:
Iâm going to stay over at Hannahâs tonight mam, weâre having a girly night. Love u see u tomorrow
The messages were sent.
